    And back to the old joke about topologists being unable to tell the difference between a cup of coffee and a doughnut.

    I once saw a machine that wound toroidial transformers (note for non-nerds: coils of wire around a powdered iron ceramic toroid core). I’m still not sure I believe it really worked without some form of elvish magic.
