    It’s also rather sobering that after fourteen years as a full-time journalist not a word of mine seems to be worth three dollars…

    Just for clarification, FT Profile doesn’t exist anymore. In fact it was bought by LexisNexis in 1999 (if I remember correctly) after the FT decided that the database market was too crowded to run a profitable operation.

    I personally think it’s good that databases charge so much money for access. I work in newspaper syndication and part of my job is to ensure that Factiva and LexisNexis don’t undervalue our content. All revenues go straight back into editorial investment and that has to be a good thing.

    If you want a cheap searchable database, I can recommend a subscription to FT.com. It has around 500 sources worldwide (including major newspaper titles and magazines) and you get unlimited acccess for 75 quid a year.

    The late John Diamond always swore by elibrary.com, which is inexpensive ($30 a year, I think) and indexes a lot of sources.
