I enjoyed the House Troll very much. I like the idea of decency and sobriety stemming from dark supernatural forces and also the way the ‘Word of God’ and House Trolls co-exist, reminds me of some interesting stories friends from staunch Free Presbyterian Gaelic backgrounds have told me.
That’s almost gnostic, isn’t it – decency and order coming from aspects of the supernatural that really couldn’t give a gnome’s hat for mankind except perhaps as some sort of herd animal. It seems to tie in with the current seasonal joy exuding from our cousins to the west, where the godly are complaining that Christmas isn’t being commercialised enough, but I’m not sure I have a mind sufficiently advanced to explain exactly how.
Well, tell us hen it’s done.
It might take some time. The point is that to work as an English translation it’s going to have to sit very loose indeed to Lagerlöf’s sentence structure and choice of metaphor. At least, that’s how I see it. I might even abolish the owl.
David, did you know that some of these stories are online in Swedish? Though, I think, only the first volume. The Runeberg project, I think it’s called.
