wicked and clever

The Daily Telegraph is often the most informative newspaper in England, because the most slanted.

This is largely true of the war in Iraq, which the paper wants more even that Ariel Sharon. The leader I have linked to — read all the way to the end — is the most perfect manifestation of American imperialism I have ever read.

What’s more, it reveals a perfectly consistent policy. If there is a prolonged war in which our troops are dying to make Israel safe from hypothetical Iraqi nukes, and German troops are not, this will weaken the EU terribly, which is of course what the DT wants. If there is a short, triumphal war, this will also move us away from Europe and towards America. Only if there is a prolonged and painful war which the British public revolts against will the strategy backfire. Even then, it will destroy Blair and rip the Labour party in half (or at least detach a Blairite eighth). So the paper can’t lose.

But it’s worth comparing the Telegraph‘s line with the Independent‘s. You’d never think they were talking about the same mini-summit, or molehill.
