It won&#8217;t win, of course, but it would be nice to make the shortlist alongside the likes of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0140283897\/andrewbrownssite\" title=\"Freedom Evolves\">Dan Dennett<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1841157457\/andrewbrownssite\" title=\"Nature via Nurture\">Matt Ridley<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0571214967\/andrewbrownssite\" title=\"The Backroom Boys\">Francis Spufford<\/a> (who told me about it), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0552997048\/andrewbrownssite\" title=\"A short History of nearly everything\">Bill Bryson<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0141011017\/andrewbrownssite\" title=\"The Essential difference\">Simon Baron-Cohen<\/a>. I&#8217;m surprised and dismayed that <a href=\"http:\/\/mainlymartian.blogs.com\/semijournal\/\" title=\"Oliver, his blog\">Oliver Morton<\/a>&#8216;s <em>Mapping Mars<\/em> didn&#8217;t make it. The prize for the most ambitious title, in the face of stiff competition, goes to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1840464887\/andrewbrownssite\">Sex, Botany, and Empire<\/a>, a book about Joseph Banks and Carl von Linn&eacute;. Botany I can see. Empire, I can see: without it, Banks would not have got breadfruit, and Linnaeus got no further than Lapland. But sex?
