{"id":510,"date":"2003-01-13T16:42:48","date_gmt":"2003-01-13T20:42:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thewormbook.com\/hlog\/?p=510"},"modified":"2003-01-13T16:42:48","modified_gmt":"2003-01-13T20:42:48","slug":"pilgrims-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thewormbook.com\/hlog\/?p=510","title":{"rendered":"Pilgrim&#8217;s protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mark Pilgrim has <a href=\"http:\/\/diveintomark.org\/archives\/2003\/01\/13.html#semantic_obsolescence\" title=\"very angry post about standards\">lost his temper<\/a> about the <span class=\"caps\">W3C <\/span>abolishing a couple of tags in the <span class=\"caps\">XHTML <\/span>specification. I don&#8217;t understand why. That may not be news. I understand, at best, about half of what I read on his site: this is hard core programming and web design, written by an expert for other experts, but how else does one learn except by eavesdropping and experiment? Still, in this instance, he claims they have dropped two tags whose usefulness he daily illustrates: <span class=\"loony>&lt;CITE&gt; and &lt;Q&gt;<\/span> in their latest draft specification. He gives <href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/2002\/WD-xhtml2-20021211\/mod-text.html#s_textmodule\" title=\"The text module of the new spec, referenced from Pilgrim's site\" \/>references<\/a>. But when I follow these up, I discover that the missing tags are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/2002\/WD-xhtml2-20021211\/mod-text.html#edef_text_quote\" title=\"The quote definition\">there<\/a> all along: although &lt;Q&gt; is now &lt;QUOTE&gt;. But the example <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/2002\/WD-xhtml2-20021211\/mod-text.html#edef_text_quote\">&lt;QUOTE&gt;<\/a>shown uses &lt;CITE&gt; as well.
