I can&#8217;t quite put my finger on the evidence that persuaded me that&#8212;to put it crudely&#8212;racism will decide this election. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/opinion\/commentators\/mary-dejevsky\/mary-dejevsky-id-love-to-think-the-us-is-ready-for-a-black-president-909598.html\">Mary Dejevsky&#8217;s piece<\/a> in today&#8217;s <em>Independent <\/em>is part of it. But I think the most telling nugget of information was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/imagepages\/2008\/07\/16\/us\/20080716_POLL_GRAPHIC.html\">the poll<\/a> showing that 24% of Americans think their country is &#8220;not ready&#8221; for a black president. This is more than five times as many as those who say they wouldn&#8217;t vote for such a candidate, but in the privacy of the voting booth it means the same thing.
