{"id":1530,"date":"2005-05-05T09:50:32","date_gmt":"2005-05-05T13:50:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thewormbook.com\/hlog\/?p=1530"},"modified":"2005-05-05T09:50:32","modified_gmt":"2005-05-05T13:50:32","slug":"local-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thewormbook.com\/hlog\/?p=1530","title":{"rendered":"Local Politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Charles Arthur has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlesarthur.com\/blog\/index.php?p=417\">thoughtful screed<\/a> up this morning about why he&#8217;ll vote Green, though he lives in a constituency with an unshakeable Conservative majority &#8212; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theyworkforyou.com\/mp\/alan_haselhurst\/saffron_walden\">the MP<\/a> is the deputy speaker.<\/p>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a nice argument, but I live in the same constituency and I have news. There is <a href=\"http:\/\/politics.guardian.co.uk\/hoc\/constituency\/0,,-1267,00.html\">no Green candidate<\/a> here. What we do have, perhaps uniquely, is <em>three<\/em> candidates to the right of Michael Howard &#8212; Ukip, Veritas, and English Democracy.<\/p>\n\n<p>This is worrying for social democrats, in a deep way. The reason people move out here from civilisation is really, of course that the state schools are incomparably better than in London. State provision works, probably because the children are better parented.
