{"id":144,"date":"2006-02-23T11:56:44","date_gmt":"2006-02-23T15:56:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thewormbook.com\/hlog\/?p=144"},"modified":"2006-02-23T11:56:44","modified_gmt":"2006-02-23T15:56:44","slug":"education-x-150000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thewormbook.com\/hlog\/?p=144","title":{"rendered":"Education x 150,000"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From  <em>Times.<\/em> I know I bang on about this, but it is quite impossible to understand the attraction of faith schools without realising <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/article\/0,,2-2052192,00.html#cid=OTC-RSS&amp;attr=Britain\">how dreadful<\/a> the existing system is.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>Although progress has been made, Sir Cyril Taylor, chairman of the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, says that too many 11-year-olds are leaving primary school without being able to read.<br \/>\n&ldquo;One hundred fifty thousand children a year going into secondary schools who can&rsquo;t read,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s unacceptable. So we think this is where a very bright light has to be shone on the whole literacy problem, and it needs to be a high-priority item.&rdquo;<br \/>\nChildren who read and write poorly cannot follow the curriculum and are often destined to fail their <span class=\"caps\">GCSE<\/span>s.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Love that <em>often.<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Times.
