In a linkier and shorter place I would simply put the two delightful words I found while cheating at the FT crossword yesterday &#8212; <strong>elaphure<\/strong> and <strong>phlegmagogue<\/strong>. An elaphure is actually a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arkive.org\/species\/GES\/mammals\/Elaphurus_davidianus\/GES009133.html?size=large\">P&egrave;re David&#8217;s Deer,<\/a> so now we have an animal with <em>two<\/em> beautiful names, though I prefer elaphure. A <em>phlegmagogue<\/em> is not &#8212; as you might think &#8212;  a teacher of snot, but a medicine which expels it. The word has been little used since the 17th century, according to the <span class=\"caps\">OED, <\/span>which has no quotes after 1737, but one lovely cite:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>1671 Salmon Syn. Med. iii. li. 570 Electuary of Jallap..is a good Phlegmagogue.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p><span class=\"caps\">UPDATE<\/span>: Google Print, however, has <a href=\"http:\/\/print.google.com\/print?ie=UTF-8&amp;q=phlegmagogue&amp;btnG=Search\">four results,<\/a> for <em>phlegmagogue<\/em> and twenty pages on <em>elaphure.<\/em> That&#8217;s pretty impressive, though none will give you a definition.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been dithering about what to put in this slot.
