What should a writer&#8217;s word processor do?<\/p>\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Never crash or lose work.<\/li>\n<li>Move and delete words, sentences, and paragraphs.<\/li>\n<li>Transpose letters.<\/li>\n<li>Count words.<\/li>\n<li>File plain ascii copy without fuss.<\/li>\n<li>Start up so quickly you have no time to faff and think again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Is there anything else that matters? The list above is all you need for journalism. For books, or long and seriously edited articles, I&#8217;d add some things.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Notes, comments, marginal annotations<\/li>\n<li>Bibliography and quotation tracker for copyright<\/li>\n<li>Some kind of navigational and outlining framework<\/li>\n<li>Revision marking to deal with the maybe four editors in the whole world who know what it is.<\/li>\n<li>MS Office compatibility because that&#8217;s what the people at the other end will be using even if you&#8217;re not.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Anything, it seems, could be used for journalism.
