{"id":1059,"date":"2006-12-08T15:04:21","date_gmt":"2006-12-08T19:04:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thewormbook.com\/hlog\/?p=1059"},"modified":"2006-12-08T15:04:21","modified_gmt":"2006-12-08T19:04:21","slug":"a-question-for-cultured-readers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thewormbook.com\/hlog\/?p=1059","title":{"rendered":"A question for cultured readers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"caps\">OK,<\/span> I just finished off a piece for the <em>New Statesman<\/em> on the uses of heresy with the following sentence: <span class=\"sane\">&#8220;You say <em>&#8216;homoousios&#8217;<\/em> and I say <em>&#8216;homoiousios&#8217;<\/em> but we are each trying to get the other to say &#8216;uncle&#8217;.&#8221;<\/span> I did explain the Greek words earlier, since I could imagine that they would dcause trouble. But I was surprised when the editor of the section said she didn&#8217;t know what it meant to &#8220;say &#8216;uncle&#8217;.&#8221; She&#8217;s a woman of about my age, whom I have known for years. Does anyone else find the expression strange? Am I marooned in the last century?
